University of Florida landscape architecture student Ryan Mulroy submitted an elegant plan that provides color throughout the seasons and can be easily sustained and enhanced over time. He began his design as a conceptual drawing of pathways through a small area, and then brought together elements of two different ecosystems, a cypress dome and pine flatwoods. The boardwalk inside the little cypress dome provides a quiet place for reflection.

Ryan originally contemplated a major in civil engineering or architecture. We’re happy he was “hooked” into a different direction by an introductory course in landscape architecture. He sees many opportunities in his future, noting that the landscape is an experience that each of us has every day. Ryan is confident that he can use his talents to make a difference in the world by improving our landscape experience. Ultimately, after some time in the workforce and maybe starting his own firm, he would like to rebuild communities in destitute parts of the world.
