FANN Real Florida Landscapes Design Competition 2015
Central Florida Award Winner: Andrea Penuela, University of Florida

Andrea Penuela, a third year landscape architecture student at the University of Florida (UF), submitted the winning landscape design for Central Florida. Andrea’s “wetwalk” is an interpretive observation boardwalk extending from an existing trail, but is suitable for creating a beautiful wild lands experience in an urban area. The design incorporates a diversity of native water loving trees as well as shrubs, ferns, flowering aquatics and ground covers that provide habitat for a variety of fish, mammals and insects, including butterflies, bees and moths.

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Andrea moved to Orlando with her family at the age of 7. She spent a lot of time hiking in the Shingle Creek area in south Orange County and developed a strong interest in Florida ecology. When Andrea first visited UF, her interests were environmental science and art. The university exposed her to the landscape architecture program and she fell in love with it immediately. Andrea plans to graduate in 2017 with a minor in ecology and hopes to work as a landscape architect bringing environmental restoration to urban areas.
