Sabine Marcks, Landscape Design Associates

Sabine grew up in Germany, where yards, if they exist, tend to be tiny. This experience helps her visualize and create complex spaces in tiny areas. Her landscape architecture training emphasized that yards should be surrounded by natural hedges, to give nature a way to reach into the city. We see these influences in her design, which also ignores a commonly held principle of planning for “size at maturity” when planting. Instead, Sabine opted to pack in many more plants than the site can ultimately hold. This will help eliminate open spaces that weeds might colonize. As plants thrive (or not) and mature, and as the tree canopy begins to provide more shade, the homeowner can remove and possibly exchange some species. This is a more dynamic approach that engages the owner in actively maintaining an evolving yard.

Sabine told us that “it really clicked” for her when she attended Craig Huegel’s native plant classes at FANN’s inaugural Native Plant Show in 2013. She has since refocused Landscape Design Associates‘ efforts on more small residential designs incorporating native plants and wildlife habitat. FANN looks forward to the impact of her work!
