Roger Hammer

Roger served as Senior Interpretive Naturalist for Miami-Dade County Parks & Recreation for 33 years, during which time he developed a statewide reputation for both knowledge and his entertaining, informative delivery of information about Central and South Florida’s native plants and natural communities. He has been the keynote speaker at the World Orchid Conference, keynote and session speaker at numerous Florida Native Plant Society conferences, and the invited speaker for innumerable garden and landscape events throughout the state. Roger has been a part-time instructor and field trip leader for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for 22 years. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by Florida International University. He is the recipient of multiple conservation and education awards from Florida’s environmental community.

Botanists statewide consider Roger an expert on identification of native and non-native species of genera including Hamelia, Lantana, Stachytarpheta, many orchids and also invasive species. His published books include Everglades Wildflowers (2000), Florida Keys Wildflowers (2002), Exploring Everglades National Park (2004), Florida Icons: 50 Classic Views of the Sunshine State (2011) and forthcoming Attracting Hummingbirds and Butterflies in Tropical Florida (2015). He is also the author of folding laminated identification cards (2010-2011) on Southwest Florida Wildflowers, Southeast Florida Wildflowers, Central Florida Wildflowers, Southern Coastal Plain Wildflowers, and Trees of South Florida, all available in major book and museum stores.
